Scarf tutorial: The Bubble Scarf DIY

You will need:
1/4 yard fleece ( or 1/2 if you prefer longer scarves – this pattern will also work with Jersey Knit)
Chalk or marking pen
elastic thread
thread
Sewing Essentials (pins, scissors, etc.)

Scarf tutorial:  The Bubble Scarf

1 – Cut out pattern to the fleece Scarf

Print up the pattern (you can get assembly instructions here – but there is not need for this pattern.)
Cut out pattern pieces.

Decide how long and wide you want your scarf to be.  You get to be the designer here.  If you want to go the supper easy route – just use a 1/4 of fleece and that ‘s all you’ll need – no cutting involved.  If you prefer longer scarves ( the shirring will shorten it a bit) you will want to sew two lengths together.

Take your circles and place them randomly on the scarf ( again you get to be the designer here) for the example scarf I mixed the sizes and placement for a more random look.  Trace the circles all along the scarf for the entire length of the scarf

2- Prepping to sew the Fleece Scarf

Wind your bobbin with the elastic thread.  You will need to do this by hand – DO NOT do this using a machine.  When you wind have a little bit of tension on the elastic so it will stay on the bobbin, but don’t pull it so tight that it really stretches around it.  Just don’t think too hard about it and wind away!

3- Shirring the circles

Then using regular thread as your top thread, and the elastic thread as your bobbin thread, trace your circles with your sewing machine, making sure that you finish off the stitching after completing every circle.  Do this for every circle ( see the “bubbles” start popping out of the fabric!).

Using a sewing machine with elastic thread, start stitching concentric circles onto the fabric. As you sew, gently pull the fabric from behind to create gathers and ruffles in a circular pattern. The elastic thread will work its magic by cinching the fabric together, forming those delightful bubbles.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different circle sizes or spacing between them. This is where your creativity can truly shine! Whether you opt for tightly packed circles or more spaced-out ones, each variation will bring its own charm to the finished scarf.

  2. Mine isn’t working. Did you use a regular stitch? It’s not at all pulling the fabric into a bubble. Can you think of what I might be doing wrong?

    1. It is most likely the tension of the elastic thread on the bobbin. Try unwinding it and rewinding with less tension and see if that helps.
